FAQ's

Q. Why take a lesson with us?

Safety! Our quality instructors will teach you safe surfing techniques so you don’t hurt yourself or others. You will learn from professional instructors who have taught thousands of students how to surf. This will cut the learning curve by months or years with the knowledge you will get from our experienced instructors.

Q. What are the youngest and oldest students you teach?

The youngest we have taught is 3 and as old as 75. Our average age is from 6 years old to mid 50’s (students under 6 require private lessons). We welcome everyone to give surfing a try. It’s never too late to learn!

Q. Is surfing dangerous?

It can be. Surfing is an extreme sport and if you choose to go out for your first time without proper instruction or ocean knowledge you can find yourself in a dangerous situation. If you have never surfed before we recommend taking a lesson with certified instructors.

Q. Do I have to be a good swimmer or know how to swim in the ocean to take a lesson?

We recommend that you are a basic swimmer being able to keep your head above water for at least 2 minutes, but we don’t expect all swimmers to know how to swim in the ocean. Most lessons take place in waist to chest high water.

Q. How long is each lesson?

Our surf lessons & private lessons are 1.5 hours long. Our Surf Camp runs for 2 hours a day for 5 consecutive days. Our Surf Clinics are 2 days with 4 hours of surfing each day (Clinics are recommended for adults).

Q. How long does it take to learn how to surf?

It depends on the individual. Some students are up on their first wave. Most get up during their first lesson. Some take longer.
We recommend that our students take 3-4 lessons. Like any activity, you want to have a solid foundation. After 3-4 lessons, students have experienced many different conditions, tides, currents, and wave types with instructors who are in the water next to them, helping them catch waves and answering questions. By the 3rd-4th lesson, students can safely handle themselves in the surf, know their limits, and can practice on their own without our supervision.

Remember, surfing is not just being able to stand up and ride a wave. It is being able to safely and responsibly handle yourself in the ocean, and know the rules and etiquette of the lineup. This is a continual process that only comes from a lot of time in the ocean.

Q. Do you provide all the equipment?

We only provide soft-top surfboards. However, if you wish to use your own equipment you are more than welcome.

Q. What do I need to bring?

Bring a towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, and water. If you are taking a surf lesson in Beach Haven, NJ make sure to use the restroom before your lesson there are no public restrooms on LBI. Beach Badges are provided for students only on LBI.

Q. Can I take a lesson with my son/daughter?

Yes, we teach many families. You can take a private lesson, join our Surf Camp, or schedule a group lesson. Surfing is a great experience to share with your kids, and we recommend it!
